Termite Inspection and Identification

The other day I received a flier in the mail informing me that termites recently swarmed across my city infesting homes. It also stated that termites will infest more than 4 million homes this year and offered a protection plan for about $30.00 per month. I feel this is a scare tactic, however I certainly don’t want to be negligent and not consider the possible consequences. Is this a reasonable price and how is the best way for me to inspect and identify whether or not I have termites?

It is true that a termite colony can infest multiple homes and if not properly attended to, they can do a lot of damage and spread to all of the homes in your neighborhood. I would recommend that you ask several of your neighbors if they have had any problems with termites.
Most residential pest control companies have the knowledge of what to look for in determining whether or not you have termites. You can easily do your own inspection by merely walking around the perimeter of you house and looking for little dirt tunnels from the ground up to a weep holes or other penetrations. Termites need water, so open the trap door accessing the plumbing drains in front of tubs, showers, sinks, etc. and inspect for dirt tunnels up to the wood studs. If you suspect that you have termites, ask your exterminator or a neighbor for a referral of a good honest termite eradication company.
As far as paying $30.00 per month or $360.00 per year; I suggest that you get a quote for a one-time termite inspection charge. Recently I purchased a rent house that had a termite infestation. It cost me $500.00 to treat and rid this house of termites; and was given a 5 year warranty. If I were paying $360.00 per year for five years, I would have paid $1,800.00.
You are very wise to take the time to inspect for termite colonies and infestation, however be sure to also get competitive bids along with references before you begin.
