tvroom Remodeling Green

In the days of inexpensive energy, especially in the warmer climates, it wasn’t cost effective to spend extra money on green building products. As energy costs go up, it now has become cost effective to replace cheap windows and doors and add insulation.

Ten or so years ago when I converted my garage into a TV and exercise room, wooden French doors were very popular with little consideration given to the amount of heat transfer. Single pane aluminum windows were considered economical even though they performed like heaters during the summer and  refrigerators in the winter. No one paid a lot attention to the amount of insulation in the walls and ceiling. Penetrations in the walls and ceiling from electrical outlets along with can lighting were ignored.

Within the past 10 years, my utility bills have more than doubled and with our government pushing for cap and trade, it is time that I wake up and take notice.

I replaced those awful energy inefficient windows and doors with some made with double pane high “E” glass. I added extra blown insulation into my attic and sealed every penetration I could find. I replaced the 8 SEER heating and cooling unit with a split system air source heat pump with an 18 SEER rating.

I took some energy saving steps in the rest of my house as well; however, the TV and exercise room was by far the greatest “energy eating monster”. Since I have made these changes, my energy costs have dropped by a healthy 60%. My payback will be less than 4 years considering the way energy costs are rising. Not only will I be money ahead, I will also be enjoying a more cozy and comfortable home.
